An Efficient System

Your car’s air conditioning system can efficiently make your passenger cabin more comfortable. The system utilizes high- and low-pressure sides to make the air blowing through your vents cooler and drier. As refrigerant cycles through the system, it changes physical states to effectively do its job. The refrigerant, in its low-pressure state, enters the compressor to be compressed. Located in front of the radiator, the condenser cools the refrigerant, allowing it to return to a lower pressure. Refrigerant continues through an expansion valve or orifice tube to reach the evaporator, where heat is absorbed from the car’s interior. The accumulator/receiver/dryer grabs contaminants and moisture, preventing damage to the A/C.

When to Schedule an Appointment

Regardless of the make or model of your vehicle, it’s a good idea to have Lewis Automotive inspect your air conditioner periodically. Between planned visits, there are signs you may notice that should prompt you to schedule a visit for car A/C repair. If your system fails to power on, chances are your auto has an electrical problem. A broken wire is often the culprit. When the A/C comes on but produces no cold air, there may be a compressor failure. If you pay close attention, you’ll probably realize that you’re not hearing or feeling the typical cycling on and off of the compressor. Your air conditioner may be working, but it’s blowing air that’s not as cool as it should be. This usually means that the refrigerant level is too low. Although it’s normal for the A/C to need a recharge a few times over the life of your car, you shouldn’t need this service frequently. If you do, we’ll need to identify and repair the leak that’s allowing refrigerant to escape. You should also pay attention to wet carpets or puddling water under the dash. This indicates a clog in the system that’s allowing fluid to backflow. If left unaddressed, your interior may begin to mildew, and the floor can sustain structural damage. A damp odor that’s noticeable each time you engage the system likely indicates the presence of mold. It’s essential to have us remediate this situation as soon as possible to protect the air quality you’re breathing. Whether you’re being proactive before the first hot day of the season or seeking help with a known issue, the Lewis Automotive team looks forward to helping you stay cool.
