Know Your Hybrid 

True to its name, your hybrid automobile has both an electric motor and battery pack, as well as a downsized internal combustion engine. By utilizing both gas and electric power, managed by a power split device that delivers power to the wheels, your vehicle consumes less fuel and emits fewer emissions. It also uses regenerative braking to convert heat energy into a battery charge. Most hybrids are parallel hybrids. The two engines work together, connecting the transmission to power the auto. An electric motor primarily powers a less common series hybrid. The traditional engine functions as a generator to recharge the battery. A plug-in hybrid features larger batteries than its parallel hybrid counterpart that can be charged from an external connection. The additional power reserve facilitates longer driving capabilities while operating on electrical power.

Although your hybrid uses less fuel and has a smaller engine than traditional vehicles, the internal combustion unit still requires the same services as standard power plants. Batteries need to be assessed for their ability to maintain a charge and the integrity of connections. The electric motor and batteries must be kept cool by mechanisms different than the cooling system of a combustion engine. Typically, a hybrid employs a combination of air and liquid cooling methods for the electric motor and batteries. Other maintenance and repairs are nearly identical to those required by every other vehicle. Tires, for instance, must be properly inflated as well as rotated and balanced periodically to promote even wear. Your car may also need wheel alignment. Eventually, your hybrid will need new tires.
